Three Fun, Life-Extending Exercises for You and Your Dog

Boost strength, mobility, and serenity for both of you!

By Dr. Kelly Fishman

Exercise is essential for both physical and mental well-being, and the same goes for our dogs. In fact, research shows that our furry companions not only benefit from regular activity, but they also help us live longer, healthier lives.

Though it may feel more like a chore, there are many ways to make physical activity more interactive and exciting with the help of your furry friend by your side. Here are three fun, effective exercises you can do with your dog to boost strength, mobility, and serenity.

Paddleboarding and Swimming

If you love the water as much as your dog, you'll be happy to hear that paddleboarding and swimming have great health benefits for both of you. These activities are easy on the joints and improve lung capacity. Paddleboarding helps build balance and strengthens core muscles, while swimming helps reduce arthritis pain and promotes stress relief.

To get started, choose a calm body of water and invest in a dog-friendly life vest to ensure safety. Begin slowly, letting your dog get comfortable with the water or board, and always supervise closely to make it a fun and safe bonding experience for both of you.

Doggy Ninja Warrior-Style Agility Training

Dog walking is a great cardiovascular exercise, but it is not enough to build your dog's muscles and keep them strong. With Doggy Ninja Warrior-Style training, you can use household objects like pillows, cones, or tunnels to build an agility course that will strengthen your dog's muscles and provide mental stimulation. As for your own health benefits, running alongside the course with your dog boosts your physical activity and coordination.

For pet parents who want to be more proactive about their pet's strength and agility or who are unable to engage in extensive exercise, supplementation is a a great option to keep muscles and joints healthy. Studies have shown that Fortetropin, a bioactive compound derived from raw fertilized egg yolk, helps prevent muscle loss and promotes muscle growth, making it beneficial for pets of any age or activity level. Additionally, collagen strengthens ligaments and reduces arthritis risk, while probiotics enhance immune function.

Doga (Dog Yoga)

Dog yoga, or Doga as I like to call it, is an easy and relaxing exercise that everyone should incorporate into their daily routine. If you've ever wondered what inspired the downward dog pose, try it yourself alongside your pup as you both improve flexibility and reduce anxiety.

Using treats to guide your dog through gentle spine stretches is also a great way to warm-up, cool-down, and keep them mobile. This gentle and restorative activity is the perfect way to start or end your day.

Longer Lives, Stronger Bonds

However you choose to stay active with your pets, finding ways to make exercise more exciting will strengthen your bond and increase your overall well-being. Prioritizing your dog's health ensures more joyful years together with their love and companionship.
